The perfect introduction to fabric screen printing, our beginner workshop is ideal for anyone interested in learning the complete screen printing process or simply looking to print some tea towels or cushion covers with their own design for a special occasion. The sessions will run from 10am – 4pm with a 1 hour break for lunch, a great opportunity to sample one of the many food kiosks located on Levels 5 and 6 of the building. The day will be split as follows:

Morning

After an introduction into the process you’ll guided through the process of coating and exposing your screen and preparing it ready for printing.
----
Afternoon

After lunch you’ll expose your design onto the screen. While they’re drying we’ll cover ink mixing and the process of setting up the fabric tables ready for printing. When the screens are dry everyone will have a go at printing their fabric. Each person will walk away with 1-3 metres of fabric and either a cushion cover or tea towel printed with their own one or two colour designs.

My boyfriend felt that the teacher made some promises and didn’t deliver (his screen had a hole in, and she said he could do a new one then changed her mind, she said he could use three colours then changed her mind) however he also said that she stayed longer to help everyone finish which was lovely. He had a really great time and thought the teacher was good overall.

She also showed us some samples of different print techniques and explained how print techniques are used in the industry.  I was very pleased with my finished fabric.

I’ll start by saying the teachers were lovely so I didn’t want to leave a negative review however unfortunately the day was quite disorganised and I’m not sure it was really worth the money. Firstly there wasn’t tea and coffee on arrival like it said there would be, and as the teachers weren’t ready we didn’t actually start doing anything until an hour after it started. I sent my design in advance and it had mistakenly printed in reverse so my print wasn’t how I wanted it to be. It felt like instructions weren’t very clear and there was often some confusion throughout the day. As we started late we were then rushed in the afternoon for the printing part which was unfortunate as it was the most important part of the process. Overall I’m not sure I’d recommend as I was waiting around for a lot of the day due to general disorganisation.

I enjoyed the day but we weren’t told much about the technical side of screen printing which was a shame. It would be fantastic to receive a list of materials and suppliers after the course. We were very rushed after lunch which was a shame as a small group we had plenty of time and ended up finishing almost 40 minutes before the course should have finished. Disappointing.

I think more care could have gone to explaining the history and whole process before we began, as I had zero experience and didn't really understand what was going on. 

Compared to other creative classes I've gone to I felt a little abandoned in the process.

Really enjoyed the workshop, our instructors were patient and knowledgable,  I was also happy to walk away with something tangible (10 prints!). One thing I'd improve would be the advice given before the workshop to printing novices (like me!)- I didn't realise how my image would convert to film and that black parts would be the coloured parts when printing, and how line thickness is also important.

It was a nice day, I enjoyed it a lot however I don’t think it was value for money and would have been nice to printed more prints and been able to mix Color’s aka do a tie dye print and exsperiment more. But for a beginner course I think it was good. Would have been better if the tutors taught us more physically when it came to putting emulsion on to the screen.

The small workshop size was great too as there was time to talk about the process and ask lots of questions.

I had a most enjoyable day attending this course. The small number of participants meant that we had lots of personal help in mastering the techniques, and it was very hands on. It was also a working environment where we could observe more experienced artists working on their own projects. The tutor was well informed and a good teacher, we all felt very relaxed and we were encouraged to ask questions.

Had a blast at the one day beginner's workshop! The course leaders were extremely competent and eager to answer any questions in depth. They had already printed our designs on clear plastic sheets for us. After introductions, they explained the basic techniques and then we were taught in groups how to prepare the screens. There were a lot of colour choices for the inks. We were allowed to use several colours for an experimental look. The demonstrations were easy to follow and the printing itself so much fun. Great vibe, nice airy space, would definitely come again!

The class was great. The instructors were really helpful with getting the the concepts to come to life. Their knowledge of everything made it easy to ask questions. 

For a start the facilitators are so welcoming, they create an environment where everyone is at ease and therefore can take part in the workshop without any apprehension. Full marks for the Beginners T-Shirt Screen Printing Workshop! The communication beforehand was spot on, with clear instructions for artwork requirements and how to find the location. The workshop instructors were welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly,  and the workshop delivered exactly what was promised, giving us hands-on experience of every part of the screen printing process. I felt relaxed and at ease all day and thoroughly enjoyed myself, and was very happy with the end results - I've had some great feedback on the t-shirts already, and am planning to come back to do another workshop soon!

Fun and informative. Good value to come away with 5 t-shirts. Better advice should have been given beforehand about choosing or creating an image to print with, since this affects the whole process. And there was a lot of waiting around during the class while others used the machines etc.

Learn how to print your own amazing design onto a collection of t-shirts.

Courses starting on Tuesdays will run from 6:30pm -9.30pm on four consecutive evenings whilst courses starting on Saturdays will run from 10am-4pm on both the Saturday and Sunday with a 1 hour break for lunch. 

Our experienced tutors will cover the following:

Week 1 / Day 1 Morning

We’ll start with the artworking including design development and artwork creation techniques, colour separation and film printing.

Week 2 / Day 1 Afternoon

Screen preparation including coating and exposing will be covered in the first part of the session. We will then move onto colour mixing all the binders working with water-based binders. We will also introduce you to mixing the dyes ready to do the monoprinting techniques.

Week 3 / Day 2 Morning

This is a full on printing day and each student will have the opportunity to print an at least 3m of fabric. We will supply white cotton (sample of silk) but students are welcome to bring their own.

Week 4 / Day 2 Afternoon

This will be your chance to finish any printing which wasn’t completed in week 3 and experiment with speciality inks and processes such as foiling, puff, gloss, flock and the dye techniques.

Intermediate Fabric Screen Printing Course

An in-depth course perfect for anyone who’d like to gain complete commercial knowledge of the fabric screen printing process.

A  2 day weekend course perfect for anyone who’d like to gain in-depth commercial knowledge of the paper screen printing process.

Starting on Saturdays will run from 10am-4pm on both the Saturday and Sunday with a 1 hour break for lunch. The available dates in the calendar signify the first day of the course.

Our experienced tutors will cover the following:

Saturday am
We’ll start with the artworking including design development and artwork creation techniques, colour separation and film printing.

Saturday pm
Screen preparation including coating and exposing will be covered in the first part of the session. We’ll then tackle registration for multiple colour designs and ink mixing with a focus on Pantone matching. You’ll also have a chance to print initial proofs of your design.

Sunday am
This is a full on printing day and each student will have the opportunity to print an edition of at least 10 prints. We will supply 310gsm paper but students are welcome to bring their own or we can organise delivery from our wholesale supplier.

Sunday pm
This will be your chance to finish any printing which wasn’t completed in week 3 and we can trim them so they are ready to Frame. This will also be the chance to get your edition photographed, as for a unlimited time we will be selling your edition through our 3rd Rail Presents Shop free and will be displayed in all our open studio exhibitions.
